Chapter Philanthropy

Gamma Theta also supports the Children's Cancer Connection, our local philanthropy. The Children's Cancer Connection is a nonprofit organization that provides services and programs to children diagnosed with cancer. The organization also supports the families of these children, as the disease not only affects the child, but impacts the entire family.

With the help of Drake's campus, the Des Moines community, friends and family, Gamma Theta raises money each fall to support the Children's Cancer Connection. Our donations are used to send children to Camp Heart Connection Oncology Camp each summer. The week-long camp allows children battling cancer to take their mind off of treatment, partake in typical summer camp activities and enjoy being a kid again. They are able to meet peers and connect with others in similar situations.

During our fall philanthropy week, we hosted an event, Kamp Kappa, to raise money. We invited family members and children from Children's Cancer Connection to play board games and make s'mores at the Kappa house.

Cancer has affected many families, including many members of Gamma Theta. We are all so passionate about this cause and our philanthropy is one of our largest priorities as members.

NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY:

Our organization is excited to be embarking on a new journey in its philanthropic efforts which will focus on mental health and well-being. As Kappa Kappa Gamma and the Gamma Theta chapter are dedicated to becoming powerful advocates for mental health, we want to unite our members and our communities in educating, raising awareness, and reducing stigma for mental health and well-being through fundraising and service. We are proud to announce that Kappa has selected 6 partners and we have chosen NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness because of its active presence in the Des Moines area and the opportunities for service it provides to our members and community. We look forward to embarking on this new journey together and begin learning more about these organizations and in what ways we can bring awareness to this pivotal topic in our world today. In addition, another partnership that we are already working to implement into our organization and chapter is Talkspace, a digital mental health service to increase our members’ accessibility to mental health care. We are excited that the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation has provided a grant that makes the service free of charge to Kappa collegiate members and provides a discount to alumna members.
